Staff Augmentation
Add senior engineers and designers to your team on a monthly contract. U.S. hours overlap, your tools, your code ownership, no recruitment cycle, start in about two weeks.
HandsOnTech staff augmentation places vetted senior engineers and designers directly into your team on a monthly contract. They work your hours, in your tools, under your process, and you own all the code. Typical start is two weeks from signed scope, with a 30-day notice period to scale down.
Capacity, without the recruitment cycle
Hiring a senior engineer in the U.S. takes three to five months from job post to first commit, and costs you a recruiter fee plus the risk that the person is wrong. That timeline is fine when you are planning a year ahead. It is useless when you have signed a client, scoped a build and need three more developers in a fortnight.
Staff augmentation solves the second problem specifically. You get people who can work (vetted, senior, already used to shipping into someone else’s codebase) on a monthly contract you can end with 30 days’ notice.
Who this is actually for
Agencies with more work than capacity. You have won a project bigger than your bench. Subcontracting it out means losing margin and control; turning it down means losing the client. We work white-label behind your brand, in your repos, so your client sees your team.
In-house teams with a gap. A key engineer left, or a roadmap commitment landed before the headcount did. Augmentation covers the gap without a permanent hire you may not need in nine months.
Companies piloting something new. You want to try AI features, a mobile app or a design system without committing a permanent team to a bet that might not pay off.
If instead you want someone to own the outcome end to end, that is a project engagement, see website development, mobile app development or AI development.
How the engagement works
- Scoping call, the roles, the stack, the seniority, the timezone overlap. Free, and you leave with a rate and a start date.
- Candidate review, you interview the specific people. No bait-and-switch between the profile you approved and the person who shows up.
- Onboarding, they join your standups, your Slack, your board, your repositories. We do not run a parallel process.
- Weekly checkpoint, a short written summary from us on progress and blockers, so you have a paper trail without another meeting.
- Scale or stop, add seats with two weeks’ notice, reduce with 30 days’.
What we will not do
We will not put a junior in a senior seat and hope the review process catches it. We will not staff a role we cannot fill well, if you need a specialist we do not have, we say so rather than approximating.
And we do not do sub-four-hour overlap. Asynchronous-only arrangements look cheaper and consistently cost more, because every blocked question costs a full day instead of ten minutes. If your requirement is genuinely overnight handoff, we are the wrong partner and will tell you at the scoping call.
Roles we staff regularly
| Discipline | Common stacks |
|---|---|
| Frontend | React, Next.js, Astro, TypeScript |
| Backend | Node, Python, PostgreSQL, MongoDB |
| Mobile | React Native, Flutter, native iOS and Android |
| AI engineering | LLM integration, RAG pipelines, agent tooling |
| Product design | Figma, design systems, UX research |
| SEO and AEO | Technical SEO, content strategy, answer-engine optimization |

Where to start
Book a scoping call. Bring the roles you need, the stack and your timezone, and you will leave with named candidates to interview, a rate and a realistic start date, usually about two weeks out. If we cannot staff it well, we will say so on that call rather than three weeks into a search.

Common questions
How is staff augmentation different from hiring an agency for a project?
A project engagement buys an outcome, we scope it, price it and deliver it. Staff augmentation buys capacity. You direct the work day to day, run your own sprints and set the priorities, and we supply the people. Choose augmentation when you know what to build and lack the hands; choose a project when you want someone else to own delivery.
How fast can someone start?
About two weeks from a signed scope for roles we staff regularly, React, Node, React Native, Flutter, Python and product design. Less common stacks take longer because we will not fill a seat with someone who does not fit it. We tell you the honest date before you sign, not after.
Who owns the code and the intellectual property?
You do, in full, from the first commit. Work is done in your repositories under your license. Our contract assigns all IP to you and includes a mutual NDA. If you are an agency, the arrangement is white-label, your client never needs to know we exist.
What are the working hours?
A minimum of four hours overlapping U.S. business hours, and we confirm the specific window against your timezone before starting. Our HQ is in Sacramento, California. If your team runs on Eastern time, the overlap shifts accordingly, this is agreed in writing, not left to goodwill.
What happens if the person is not a good fit?
Tell us within the first 30 days and we replace them, with the transition at our cost. After that the standard 30-day notice applies. We would rather swap someone early than have you carry a bad fit for a quarter.
Can we hire the engineer permanently later?
Yes. After six months of continuous engagement there is no conversion fee. Before six months a conversion fee applies, prorated against months served. We would rather you keep someone who works out than lose the relationship over a fee.
