How to Get Your Business Mentioned in ChatGPT

ChatGPT does not rank sites, it retrieves and quotes them. Here is what actually determines whether your business gets named, and what you cannot control.

By HandsOnTech Team · July 23, 2026 · AEO, ChatGPT, AI search

ChatGPT does not maintain rankings. It answers either from training data, which you cannot influence directly, or by retrieving live pages, which you can. To be named, your pages must be crawlable by GPTBot and OAI-SearchBot, rank well enough to be retrieved, state facts in extractable sentences, and describe your business identically everywhere.

The question “how do I rank in ChatGPT” contains a wrong assumption. There is no ranking. There are two entirely different paths by which a business ends up named in an answer, and they need different responses.

The two paths, and which one you can influence

Training data. The model absorbed text about your business during training. You cannot edit this, you cannot request removal from an answer, and the lag between publishing and any training cutoff is measured in many months. Businesses named this way are usually those with substantial third-party coverage, press, directories, forums, reviews.

Retrieval. The model searches the live web, fetches pages and quotes them. This is what happens for most commercial questions, it is where citations come from, and it is almost entirely within your control.

Work on retrieval. Anyone promising to influence training data is guessing.

What does retrieval actually require?

Let the crawlers in

OpenAI operates several agents. GPTBot fetches pages for retrieval and training, OAI-SearchBot serves the search index, and ChatGPT-User fetches pages when a user’s prompt triggers browsing. Blocking any of them in robots.txt removes you from the corresponding path.

Check your robots.txt today. Plenty of sites blocked these agents during the 2023–24 wave of AI-scraping anxiety and never revisited the decision. Blocking them is a defensible choice for a publisher whose product is the content; it is rarely the right one for a business whose content is marketing.

Rank first

Browsing-based answers retrieve from search results. A page that does not rank does not get fetched, and no amount of restructuring changes that. If your commercial pages are not indexed, that is the project, not AEO.

Serve real HTML

If your content only appears after JavaScript executes, retrieval frequently sees an empty shell. Server-render your commercial pages. Test it by fetching the page with JavaScript disabled and confirming the headline and body copy are present in the source.

Write sentences a model can quote

This is the part most sites get wrong. Retrieval extracts passages, not pages. Three habits do most of the work:

  • Answer the question in the first 40 to 60 words under the heading, then explain.
  • Phrase headings as the questions buyers actually ask.
  • Use specific, checkable facts. “Industry-leading turnaround” cannot be quoted. “Two weeks from signed scope, from our Sacramento office” can.

Be one business everywhere

Models reconcile your identity across sources. If your site says one company name, your Google Business Profile says another, and a directory has a five-year-old phone number, the model either hedges or omits you. Pick the canonical name, legal name, address and phone number and make them byte-identical on your site, in your schema, and in every listing you control.

What does not work?

Claim Reality
“Pay for placement in ChatGPT” No such product exists for organic answers
“AI rank tracking with a position number” There is no position. A sampled answer is a sample of one
“Publish llms.txt and get cited” Not a ranking signal; no provider has committed to it
“Hidden text or prompt injection in the page” Detectable, against policy, and risks your search rankings too
“Guaranteed citation within 30 days” Not something anyone can guarantee

The last one deserves emphasis. Retrieval results vary between sessions for identical prompts. A vendor showing you a screenshot of your business being named has shown you one sample, not a ranking.

How to measure it honestly

Write down the 20 questions a buyer would actually ask before hiring you. Run them monthly against ChatGPT with browsing enabled. Record two things: whether you are named, and whether what is said about you is accurate. The second matters more than most people expect, being described with an old price range or a service you dropped is worse than absence.

Then watch analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com, and track branded search volume, since models often name a business without linking it.

The realistic order of work

  1. Confirm your commercial pages are indexed. If not, stop here and fix that.
  2. Unblock the AI crawlers in robots.txt.
  3. Verify pages render server-side.
  4. Add answer blocks and question-form headings to your money pages.
  5. Make entity data identical across your site, schema and listings.
  6. Then, and only then, worry about citation frequency.

Steps one to three are technical and quick. Step four is a writing job. Step five is tedious and is the one most often skipped, which is precisely why it is worth doing.

FAQs

Got questions?

Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?

Not for organic answers today. There is no advertising product that inserts your business into a generated response. Anyone offering guaranteed placement is either describing ordinary SEO work or misrepresenting what they can deliver.

Does blocking GPTBot hurt my visibility?

Yes, for the retrieval path. GPTBot fetches pages for browsing and retrieval, so blocking it in robots.txt removes you from answers that depend on live fetching. Some publishers block it deliberately to protect content, that is a legitimate trade, but make it knowingly.

Why does ChatGPT describe my business incorrectly?

Usually because your own information is inconsistent. Different service names, an old address, a phone number that varies between your site and directory listings, the model reconciles conflicting sources by guessing. Fix the inconsistency at source and the description usually converges.

How long until changes show up in ChatGPT?

For answers using live browsing, days to weeks after the page is recrawled. For answers drawn from training data, far longer and outside your control. This is why the retrieval path (being crawlable and clearly written) is the part worth working on.

Do I need to be in the top three Google results?

It helps substantially, because browsing-based answers retrieve from search results. You do not strictly need position one, but pages beyond the first page are rarely retrieved. Ranking remains the entry requirement.

Does an llms.txt file make ChatGPT cite me?

No. It is not a ranking signal and no major model provider has committed to using it. It is cheap and harmless to publish, which is why we do it, but treat it as housekeeping rather than a tactic.
