Generative Engine Optimization, A Working Guide
GEO is optimizing to be included in AI-generated answers rather than ranked in a list. Here is what the work actually consists of, in order, and what it cannot do.

Generative engine optimization is the practice of structuring a site so AI systems include it when generating answers, rather than merely ranking it in a list of links. The work is roughly 80% conventional SEO (indexing, authority, technical health) plus passage-level structure, schema depth, entity consistency, and citation-based measurement.
GEO and AEO are the same job under two names. The distinction that matters is not between the acronyms but between two ways of being found: appearing in a ranked list, and being quoted in a generated answer. This guide covers the second, in the order the work should actually be done.
Do you have a GEO problem, or an indexing problem?
Before any GEO work, check how many of your commercial pages are in Google’s index. If the answer is close to zero, stop. Retrieval draws from pages that search engines already surface. Restructuring an unindexed page is optimizing something nothing can find.
This is the most common wasted budget in this field. A site with 17 indexed pages and no service pages among them does not have a GEO problem, it has an indexing problem wearing a GEO costume.
Step 1: access
Confirm the AI crawlers can read you. In robots.txt, allow at minimum GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User, Google-Extended and CCBot.
Then confirm your pages render server-side. Fetch a commercial page with JavaScript disabled and check that the headline, body copy and links are present in the source. Live-fetching agents have short patience budgets; a page that needs JavaScript to populate is frequently seen as empty and dropped without any error you would notice.
Step 2: passage structure
This is the part that is genuinely different from traditional SEO, and it follows from one fact: retrieval operates on passages, not pages.
A model assembling an answer is looking for the specific sentences that resolve the specific question. Comprehensiveness (the thing that wins traditional rankings) actively works against you if it means the answer arrives on line 40.
Four rules:
- Answer first, elaborate second. 40 to 60 words, factual, immediately under the heading.
- Headings phrased as questions. Match the wording buyers actually use.
- Facts over adjectives. Ranges, durations, dates, named tools. “Fast” is unquotable; “two weeks from signed scope” is a sentence a model reproduces verbatim with attribution.
- One table per commercial page. Tabular data extracts cleanly and gets reused far out of proportion to the effort of making it.
Step 3: entity consistency
Models resolve your business by reconciling mentions across sources. When they disagree, the model hedges or omits.
Pick canonical strings (trading name, legal name, address, phone, email) and make them byte-identical in your visible HTML, your schema, your footer, your Google Business Profile and every directory listing you control. Not “equivalent”. Identical. Suite 4 and Ste 4 are two different strings to a matching system.
This step is tedious, unglamorous and skipped more often than any other, which is exactly why it is worth doing.
Step 4: schema
Structured data does not make a model cite you, but it makes your facts unambiguous. Ship Organization sitewide, Service on service pages, FAQPage wherever you have an FAQ, BreadcrumbList everywhere, and Article on posts with author and dates.
Two prohibitions worth stating plainly: no AggregateRating without verifiable reviews, and no LocalBusiness for a city where you have no actual address. Both are policy violations and both are the kind of thing that costs you rich results permanently.
Step 5: authority
Retrieval favours sources that already have standing, which means GEO runs into the same wall as SEO. Structural work makes a page citable; it does not make it trusted.
There is no technical substitute for this. Directory presence, industry listings, genuine press and one or two link assets people actually reference, these are the input, and they are slow. Any GEO proposal that omits authority entirely is selling you the easy 20%.
How do you measure GEO?
| What to track | How | Caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Citation presence | 20 fixed buyer questions, run monthly | Answers vary per session: trend, do not read single results |
| Accuracy of description | Record what is said, not just whether you appear | Being described wrongly is worse than absence |
| AI referral traffic | Analytics, by referrer host | Small for most sites, and real |
| Branded search volume | Search Console | Models name businesses without linking them |
Notice what is absent: a position number. There is no rank in a generated answer, and any tool reporting one is reporting a sample.
What can GEO not do?
It cannot get an unindexed page cited. It cannot manufacture authority. It cannot influence what a model absorbed during training. It cannot guarantee a citation, because the same prompt produces different sources across sessions.
Expect the honest outcome: better inclusion in answers for specific questions where you have a genuinely direct answer, over months, on top of a site that already ranks.

Got questions?
Is GEO different from AEO?
In practice they describe the same work and the terms are used interchangeably. AEO came from the answer-engine framing and GEO from academic work on generative search. If a vendor sells them as two services with two fees, that is a pricing decision rather than a technical distinction.
Does GEO require new content or a rewrite of existing pages?
Start by restructuring pages that already rank, because retrieval draws from pages search engines already surface. New content only helps once the existing money pages are structured to be extractable. Reversing that order is the most common way GEO budgets get wasted.
What is the single highest-impact change?
A short factual answer placed immediately under each heading, before any elaboration. Retrieval extracts the first passage that resolves the question, so an answer buried under context loses to a competitor's answer that comes first.
Will GEO reduce my website traffic?
It can. Being quoted in an answer sometimes satisfies the user without a click. For high-consideration B2B purchases, being named as the recommended provider is usually worth more than the lost session, but you should expect the impressions-to-clicks relationship to look worse, not better.
How do I know whether GEO is working?
Track citation presence against a fixed list of buyer questions, referral traffic from AI products, and branded search volume. There is no position metric and no reliable rank tracker, so trend across repeated samples rather than reading a single result.
Is GEO worth it for a small business?
Yes for specific long-tail questions where a direct answer beats a comprehensive one, and no as a substitute for authority. A small site can win "how much does a Shopify migration cost for a 200-product store" long before it wins "ecommerce development".
