The short answer

This free technical SEO audit checks crawl and index mechanics: HTTP status codes, redirect chains and loops, indexability signals, canonical correctness and conflicts, robots.txt rules, sitemap validity, www and trailing-slash canonicalisation, hreflang and structured data validity. It complements the on-page SEO Audit rather than duplicating it.

Context

Why it matters

Technical SEO problems are quiet. Your content is fine, your links are fine, and one canonical tag pointing at the wrong URL is telling Google to ignore the page entirely. A three-hop redirect chain from an old migration bleeds link equity and crawl budget. A noindex left on after staging keeps a page out of the index for months while everyone wonders why it isn't ranking. None of these announce themselves, traffic just doesn't arrive. This audit checks the mechanics that determine whether search engines can reach, read and index your page at all, which is upstream of everything else you might do. If check TSEO-04 or TSEO-06 fails, nothing else on your SEO list matters until it's fixed.

Methodology

Methodology

01

Paste any public URL

We fetch the page the way a browser and crawler would, no login walls, no probing.

02

Collect signals once

HTML, headers, robots/sitemap, and optional Lighthouse lab data feed every tool from one pass.

03

Score with published weights

Each check has a fixed weight that sums to 100. N/A checks leave the denominator so empty pages aren’t unfairly punished.

FAQs

Free Technical SEO Audit FAQs

How does this differ from the SEO Audit?

That one weights on-page content and metadata. This goes deeper on crawl and index mechanics, redirects, canonicalisation, status codes.

Does it crawl my whole site?

No, one page plus site-level signals like robots.txt and sitemap. Full crawls are part of our paid SEO programme.

What's a redirect chain?

A → B → C instead of A → C. Each hop loses a little equity and wastes crawl budget.

What's a canonical conflict?

Contradictory signals, like a self-referencing canonical alongside a noindex, or a canonical pointing somewhere unexpected.

Do I need hreflang?

Only if you serve multiple languages or countries. It's marked N/A if absent.

My page returns 200 but isn't indexed.

Common causes are noindex, a canonical pointing elsewhere, robots.txt disallow, or thin content. This audit checks the first three directly.
