This free mobile-friendly test checks whether a page works on phones: viewport configuration, pinch-zoom availability, horizontal overflow at 375px, tap target size and spacing, font legibility, and mobile Core Web Vitals. It replaces Google's Mobile-Friendly Test, which was retired in December 2023.

Why it matters
Google shut down its Mobile-Friendly Test tool in December 2023, and Search Console dropped the mobile usability report with it, which left a lot of people with no straightforward way to check. This fills that gap and goes further, because passing Google's old binary test was never the same as being genuinely usable on a phone. The checks that catch the most real problems are horizontal overflow at 375px, which produces that sideways-scrolling sensation nobody can quite locate, and disabled pinch-zoom, which is both a usability failure and an accessibility one. Both are usually one CSS or meta-tag line.

What screen size do you test?
375px wide, the iPhone SE/mini baseline. If it works there, it works wider.
What's horizontal overflow?
An element wider than the screen, causing sideways scroll. Usually a fixed-width image, table or padding bug.
Why does disabling zoom fail?
It blocks users who need to magnify text. It's a WCAG failure as well as a usability one.
Is my responsive theme automatically fine?
Not necessarily. Themes handle layout; overflow usually comes from your own content, a wide table, an unconstrained embed.
Does mobile-friendliness affect rankings?
Yes. Google indexes mobile-first, so your mobile page is the one being ranked.
